ConsenSys is a venture production studio and the leading technology firm in blockchain globally. We deliver products, solutions and platforms built using blockchain technology to transform how business is done in complex network of buyers, suppliers and consumers.

Our teams are busy at work building the future of identity, financial markets, commerce, the music industry, security, social impact, sustainability, smart cities and infrastructure, and more. To accomplish this we've built out a flat organizational structure which we call the ConsenSys Mesh: a network of individuals & teams working autonomously and towards the same goal. Our mission is to use these decentralized solutions to fundamentally reshape the economic, social, and political operating systems of the planet. If you are someone that thrives in a fast-paced environment where being self-directed, determined, and resilient are a requirement, we would love for you to join us.

About Research at ConsenSys:

ConsenSys Research is a team of writers, academics, and industry experts exploring decentralization and the early blockchain ecosystem. As blockchain development moves toward consumer-facing applications and more widespread adoption, it is increasingly important to offer useful context, clear explanations, and rigorous data and analysis about decentralization and the first use cases from ConsenSys and beyond. Our objectives include:
  • Conduct data-driven and empirical work to understand the mechanisms of decentralized systems, including how and why blockchain functions in, and ultimately changes, the structure of organizations, economies and societies
  • Explore key themes around decentralized economic and societal structures and their implications
  • Produce public-facing writing, including both academic and non-academic articles and use case studies, to deepen public understanding of our key themes
  • Support internal initiatives with evidence-based advice and rigorous methods for measurement & evaluation

Current work explores the following themes and related use cases:
  • Identity: How do individuals represent, withhold or monetize their identities in decentralized networks?
  • Cryptocurrencies and Decentralized Economies: What purposes do cryptocurrencies serve? How do fiat currencies and cryptocurrencies co-exist?
  • Tokenization: How do tokens catalyze new value structures and exchanges?
  • Trust & Reputation: How do trust and reputation develop within decentralized systems? What role does each play in social interactions?
  • Ecosystems: How does a decentralized ecosystem develop and what are its unique benefits for stakeholders?
  • Incentives: How can individuals be motivated to participate in nascent ecosystems and to make such ecosystems sustainable?
  • Organizational Forms: How can organizations self-organize? How do emergent forms of organizations function?
  • Design & User Interaction: What are the implications for the design of protocols and applications for users in decentralized networks?

About the role:

We are looking to add to our team of researchers. You will be in charge of leading the full-cycle of research projects — identifying data sources, forming research questions and/or hypothesis, collecting data, analyzing data and writing up your findings for both academic and practitioner audiences. We are excited about big questions and open to many research methodologies.

Responsibilities:
  • Presentation of research proposals
  • Preparation of questionnaires or other data collection instruments
  • Management of the distribution of the questionnaires and briefing of the other researchers involved
  • Monitoring and evaluating the data collection process
  • Using statistical software to organise and analyse the information gathered
  • Analysis and interpretation of the data
  • Preparation of the reports and presentation of the results
  • Provision of recommendation for the clients on how to use the results
  • Lead/support research teams (within and outside of ConsenSys) in the planning and design of qualitative research studies including screening, recruiting, and developing field instruments.
  • Conduct fieldwork in a variety of locations, both in the US and internationally utilizing an array of ethnographic techniques and best practices.
  • Capture fieldwork data using video and still cameras and audio recording equipment.
  • Contribute to research presentations and reports utilizing a variety of narrative and visual storytelling techniques including models and frameworks.

Requirements/Nice to haves:
  • PhD in Organizational Behavior, Management, Economics, Statistics, Decision Making, Mathematics, Business, Technology & Society, Anthropology, Sociology, Psychology or related field
  • Ability to design, execute and analyze original research studies
  • Knowledge of qualitative and/or quantitative analysis (e.g. statistical software, qualitative analysis software)
  • Well developed written and spoken communication skills and good manner to present results
  • Analytical and critical thinking
  • Detail-orientation and ability to work accurately under time pressure
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Experience gathering qualitative data and writing research reports and presentations from that data
  • Proven ability to be a vital, active member of a team within a flexible and collaborative environment
  • Passion for Ethereum and knowledge of the blockchain ecosystem

Here are some of the perks of being part of a unique organization like ConsenSys:
  • The forefront of a revolution. At ConsenSys we fundamentally believe that a next generation of technologies presents the opportunity to create a more just and equitable society. ConsenSys Research seeks to understand the mechanisms by which that society can be achieved.
  • A dynamic startup environment. ConsenSys is a thought leader in the blockchain space and we are absorbing a significant portion of the mindshare. This is both exciting and challenging, as we learn to scale our organization while adhering to the principles of decentralization.
  • Continuous learning. You will be constantly exposed to new languages, frameworks and ideas from your peers and as you work on different projects -- challenging you to stay at the top of your game.
  • Deep intellectual challenges. This entire ecosystem is about 10 years old. Ethereum itself is three years old. There is much work to be done before these platforms can scale to the order of millions or billions of users. ConsenSys is building the technology platforms that can get us to those next thresholds of scale and the Research Circle wants to build the knowledge that will shape the products to have the best possible impact on a more human, decentralized future.
  • Opportunity to combine the best of both academic and industry worlds. Here you will get otherwise rare opportunities and access to study closely dynamic processes in the blockchain ecosystem. You will have the autonomy of choosing research projects and methodology. The sky is the limit.
